“Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart so sad? I will put my hope in God! I will praise him again— my Savior and my God! Now I am deeply discouraged, but I will remember you— even from distant Mount Hermon, the source of the Jordan, from the land of Mount Mizar.”
Psalms 42:5-6 NLT

Depression is one of the most common emotional ailments. One antidote for depression is to meditate on the record of God’s goodness to his people. This will take your mind off the present situation and give hope that it will improve. It will focus your thoughts on God’s ability to help you rather than on your inability to help yourself. When you feel depressed, take advantage of this psalm’s antidepressant. Read the Bible’s accounts of God’s goodness, and meditate on them.(Tyndale Study Bible)
Reading this Scripture, I am immediately reminded about off a watch. Can you remember the first watches you had to wind them daily? Then followed the automatic wind watch, which wound itself by the movement of your arm. Then watches got batteries, all you need to do is change the battery from time to time. I was looking at the iWatch in the iStore; it can do almost anything, technology, wow.
I am not an expert on depression but what I do know it’s on the increase daily. Early days it was not as rife as its know. I think if you consider the fast pace of the world today it adds to the problem. Together with the information overload, we exposed to. The amount and the pace we are to make decisions at, it’s crazy.
So just like the Psalmist asks why so sad? It’s because we don’t spend enough time winding our watches, in other words, time for ourselves. Our Spiritual health? Even the modern watch battery needs replacing. The Human body has not evolved like the watch has. It still the same as 100 years ago. Back then there was far more time to wind your watch. In essence, in this fast paced world we should take far more time for ourselves. Not always possible. The new buzz words are quality time, yes make every moment count. We are continuously forced to produce more. Are we taking more winding and replacing battery time?
Just as the scripture says above we should put our hope in God he is the healer of all things. The Psalmist makes reference the Mount Hermon the source of the Jordaan river, with all its life-giving qualities. You see God is our Jordaan river, all we need to do is have faith. As the commentator says above meditate on Gods word and His goodness, the results will follow.
“Lord I pray for time to spend in Your Word and with You. Thank you for grace and blessing. In Jesus name. Amen.”
