Rejoice always

“Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”
‭‭1 Thessalonians‬ ‭5:16-18‬ ‭NIV‬‬
Our joy, prayers, and thankfulness should not fluctuate with our circumstances or feelings. Obeying these three commands—be joyful, never stop praying, and be thankful—often goes against our natural inclinations. When we make a conscious decision to do what God says, however, we will begin to see people in a new perspective. When we do God’s will, we will find it easier to be joyful and thankful.

We cannot spend all our time on our knees, but it is possible to have a prayerful attitude at all times. This approach is built upon acknowledging our dependence on God, realising his presence within us, and determining to obey him fully. Then we will find it natural to pray frequent, spontaneous, short prayers. A prayerful attitude is not a substitute for regular times of prayer but should be an outgrowth of those times. (Tyndale Study Bible)
I was in a pub over the weekend. Yes, a bar, I observed something. Many of the patrons were obviously having a couple too many drinks. I stood wondering what motivates them. They are chasing fun or having fun. The thing is nothing they were doing is lasting. And the following day they are going to have a hangover. So the fun is only for a couple of hours.
All people want fun and enjoyment in their lives. Trying to find it in a bar is not lasting. Don’t get me wrong there is nothing wrong with drinking. It is the consequence overindulgence that’s the problem.
This particular pub is referred to as a “local.” Regular customers meet. It feels like home. The point I am trying to make is that there are other places to meet with friends and acquaintances. Church, Bible study, Social groups and events. There are much more. The results from them will be more lasting than what happens in pubs.
If you want a result, it takes action. Consider the verse above, rejoice pray and be thankful. Dress yourself with these traits and you will see people in a different light. You will find that you are more at peace and don’t need to seek fun in dodgy places.
Yes, I can hear you saying its not the same. How will you know if you have not tried the above? I can hear you thinking what will people say. I can tell you, the joy that you receive from God and the promises above are far more lasting and rewarding. We have not even spoken of the promise of eternal life.
Just as the commentator says even your prayer life does not have to be one-dimensional.
Lord, I pray these touch people’s, heart. Amen.
