For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places. (Ephesians 6:12 NLT)9
These who are not “flesh-and-blood enemies” are demons over whom the devil has control. They are not mere fantasies—they are very real. We face a powerful army whose goal is to defeat Christ’s church. When we believe in Christ, these beings become our enemies, and they try every device to turn us away from him and back to sin. Although we are assured of victory, we must engage in the struggle until Christ returns, because Satan is constantly battling against all who are on the Lord’s side. We need supernatural power to defeat Satan, and God has provided this by giving us his Holy Spirit within us and his armor surrounding us. If you feel discouraged, remember Jesus’words to Peter: “Upon this rock I will build my church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it” (Matthew 16:18). (Tyndale Study Bible)
My experiences in life echo these words from Paul to the Ephesians. We always think our enemies are flesh-and-blood, but they not. The first that comes to mind is the images on TV. Are the things that we see on television these days appropriate by Godly standard? The images the internet allows are even scarier. What’s more is that these things are so readily available to our kids. The discipline required is of the highest magnitude.
Marriage is one of the oldest institutions. The devil and dark world attacks that first because together we are stronger than when we are alone. The family unit is so strong and will be attacked all the time. The devil won’t bother with weak. He will come at the strong. Why? Because the victory will be sweeter, and it gives him an opportunity to show off. An amazing couple may fail and we think we should bail earlier because if they could not succeed, how can we?
What we do have however, just as Scripture says, is the power of the Holy Spirit. And that power is supernatural, just allow it.
How many have been faced with a situation and you know it’s wrong, yet still get drawn into it? Then you are hooked. It’s at that moment you need to call on the power of the Holy Spirit. Do an 180-degree turn, no matter how tough. The devil’s voice will say just go with it this once and then I can turn. Going with it is going to make the situation worse.
How to overcome that temptation is to call on the Holy Spirit through prayer. Get quiet before God and call for His help. Just like I said a couple of days ago, rely on His power.
“Lord, I pray that you will give power through the Holy Spirit to overcome all these attacks from the devil. God, you know where I need help. Let me be strong to overcome those temptations. In Jesus name. Amen”
