Real love

“We know what real love is because Jesus gave up his life for us. So we also ought to give up our lives for our brothers and sisters.”
‭‭1 John‬ ‭3:16‬ ‭NLT‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬
Real love is an action, not a feeling. It produces selfless, sacrificial giving. The greatest act of love is giving oneself for others. How can we “give up our lives”? By serving others with no thought of receiving anything in return. Sometimes it is easier to say we’ll die for others than to truly live for them—this involves putting others’ desires first. Jesus taught this same principle of love in John 15:13 “There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” (Tyndal Study Bible)
Love is an action. The word is used as a verb and is all about actions.
It makes me think off couples therapy and the foundation thereof – the five love languages. Just as a matter of interest, here they are: 1. Words of affirmation 2. Quality time 3. Receiving gifts 4. Acts of service 5. Physical touch. Every one of these requires an action. You would have to make an effort. That’s why they speak about you having to work on a relationship.
Jesus gave up his life for us – an action. A selfless action if any. It reminds me of that question again: “who is the greatest among us?” He who serves most. It just makes me think that nothing worthwhile just happens. It takes action. Even if you want to win the lotto, you have to buy a ticket.
There are a couple of words in the commentary that stand out for me; selfless, sacrificial giving and putting other’s desires first.  To me, selflessness is the most important of them all. It makes me think of these words again, Holy, Humble and Pure.
Lots of words, the thing is we should give up ourselves for others. It’s not about dying but giving up your time and yourself for others. It is human nature wanting to be recognised and acknowledged for what you do. Is that true selflessness?
Practice real love.
“Lord I pray for selfless behaviour. I thank you for your love. Amen”
