True humility and fear of the LORD lead to riches, honor, and long life. (Proverbs 22:4 NLT)
This general observation—that fear of the Lord leads to riches, honor, and long life—would have been especially applicable to an obedient Israelite living in Solomon’s God-fearing kingdom. Nevertheless, some have been martyrs at a young age, and some have forfeited all their wealth for the sake of God’s Kingdom. The book of Proverbs describes life the way it should be. It does not dwell on the exceptions.
So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. (James 4:7 NLT)
How can you come close to God? James gives five ways: (1) “Humble yourselves before God” (4:7). Yield to his authority and will, commit your life to him and his control, and be willing to follow him. (2) “Resist the devil” (4:7). Don’t allow Satan to entice and tempt you. (3) “Wash your hands . . . purify your hearts” (that is, lead a pure life) (4:8). Be cleansed from sin, replacing your desire to sin with your desire to experience God’s purity. (4) “Let there be tears for what you have done” (4:9). Don’t be afraid to express deep heartfelt sorrow for what you have done. (5) “Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up in honour”(Tyndal Study Bible)
This reminds me of yesterday’s words Holy humble and pure. Take time to read these comments on how to get close to God. Can we apply these five things every day, it certainly is a challenge? Point 5 Wow this is amazing. What a commitment to look forward to.
Yesterday humility came out strong, and today it’s the case again. Key words in both scriptures.
The more time I spend meditating this I come to realise that there is no power in worldly things. The power is in the things of God. Yes, there are many things in the world that keep you from God and His joy, which is lasting.
Both scriptures make a promise. Riches, honour, long life and protection from sin is the commitments. We just have to do our bit and humble ourselves.
We always think it’s better on the other side or our circumstance is the worst. I have a heavy heart this morning; I should not seek comfort in the world, I should move closer to God and seek comfort with him and his Word. There is a Word and message for all of us.
The other day, I was criticised, that I should not preach, here’s the things, all and everything I am talking about is in the Bible. I am merely reminding or bringing the ideas to the surface. The same time, talking to myself.
“Lord Jesus may I stay humble before You and the Word. In my challenge may I find the answer in your Word. I give thanks for the time with You. In Jesus name, I pray. Amen.”
