“Watch out! Don’t do your good deeds publicly, to be admired by others, for you will lose the reward from your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 6:1 NLT)
Many people desire positions of leadership and authority. Not only in business, but in the Church too. It is dangerous when love for a title grows stronger than loyalty to God, this is precisely what happened to the Pharisees and teachers of religious law. Jesus condemned leaders who served themselves rather than others(Tyndale Sudy Bible)
We all chase this thing called “fame”, although it is not fame that we desire, but rather recognition. From a very young age, we seek this. Remember these words, “Dad watch, look at this,” All that we are doing is seeking recognition from others.
The older we get, the harder it is to gain that recognition in the fast-paced world in which we live. There is much competition, and yes, your competition would rather offend you than help.
In the situation I find myself, I learnt a valuable lesson: nobody is going to help you. Sure, there are some exceptions, but the statement applies to a general trend in the world. The only person who is going to help you is yourself. So whatever you are doing at this moment, do it to the best of your ability. The encouragement I heard the other day was to “be an over achiever”. So if you are a street sweeper, do it with passion and be the best at it. Being the best at what you do will set you up for the following step or the next job. It will happen… What’s more, you can rely on God for assistance and do everything to Glorify Him.
The Church is an amazing Body. One thing which stands out to me is that a preacher does not simply arrive there and immediately step onto the platform and begin to preach. No matter how talented he/she is. They have to pay their dues and for each person that is different. They have to serve, be obedient and show that are ready and able to stand on the platform. The common trend with all leaders in the Church is they have paid their dues, serving as an usher, packing chairs or some other work with minimal glamour. Keep on doing that and an opportunity will be yours.
Be careful not to seek recognition, rather do your best. You will be rewarded!
Listen to these words: “serve the people who nobody wants and you will attract those who everybody wants.”
“Lord make me do your wish. Amen.”
