“Even while we were with you, we gave you this command: “Those unwilling to work will not get to eat.””2 Thessalonians 3:10 NLT
Some people in the Thessalonian church were falsely teaching that because Christ would return any day, people should set aside their responsibilities, quit work, do no future planning, and just wait for the Lord. But their lack of activity only led them into sin. They became a burden to the church which was supporting them; they wasted time that could have been used for helping others, and they became meddlers (3:11). These church members may have thought that they were more spiritual by not working, but Paul tells them to be responsible and get back to work. Being ready for Christ means obeying him in every area of life. Because we know that Christ is coming, we must live in such a way that our faith and our daily practice will please him when he arrives.
Thess. 3:8–10 worked. The particular issue related to working diligently to earn one’s living. Though Paul had the “right” as an apostle to receive support, he chose rather to earn his own living to set an example (cf. 1 Cor.)
Genesis 2:15 “The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and keep it.”
As far back as Genesis, it is our command to work. We shall earn our keep by the sweat of our brow; written in Genesis 3. The Lord rewards good works. You reap what you sow. Sead and harvest time is one of the oldest principles in the Bible?
This scripture makes me think. How few people in this world today don’t have to work. Have you ever witnessed the lazy person getting a promotion over the hard worker? Nope, I thought so. How many times have you been in conversation and someone comments know he/she is a hard worker. My question which person do you want to be? What do you want people to say about you? In my previous life, I would want people to say he is hardworking. Today it’s not important, it’s what God thinks.
Two things come to mind writing this. First, there is much work in this world. How many people can we reach and feed today? Carefully think about it, is the work in the world ever finished? Nope, I don’t believe. Second, as a Christian, we are to Glorify God. Are we going to do that being lazy? Nope.
Who do you want to impress people or God?
So work to the best of your ability. Do everything this way.
“Lord all the glory to you. Give me the perseverance to Glorify you. In Jesus name. Amen.”
