“But those who obey God’s word truly show how completely they love him. That is how we know we are living in him. Those who say they live in God should live their lives as Jesus did.”1 John 2:5-6 NLT
How can you be sure that you belong to Christ? This passage gives two ways to know: if you do what Christ says and live as Christ wants. What does Christ tell us to do? John answers in 3:23: “Believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and love one another.” True Christian faith results in loving behavior; that is why John says that the way we act can give us assurance that we belong to Christ.
To live as Jesus lived doesn’t mean choosing 12 disciples, performing great miracles, and being crucified. We cannot merely copy Christ’s life—much of what Jesus did had to do with his identity as God’s Son, the fulfillment of his sIpecialrole in dying for sin, and the cultural context of the first-century Roman world. To walk today as Christ did, we must obey his teachings and follow his example of complete obedience to God and loving service to people. (Tyndal Study Bible)
Reading this scripture reminds of the kids in Church. They are always asking what would Jesus do. It’s like a fashion to them. What I wonder is, do they understand the full meaning of those words? “Should lead their lives as Jesus did.”
Cycling home this evening pondering on two things. I was thinking how quickly we return to our understanding. Not relying on God. I say this because we always have these good intentions, and as the day progresses things go south. We fall horribly short of living as the scripture says.
It reminds me, and this is not an excuse. One can’t accept Jesus as their savior and then think all will change overnight. Becoming like Jesus is a process. When saved we become Christian babies, and should be taughtand weened off our old life. Shown how to become an adult Christian. Eventually having Christian babies of our own. In other words leadingothers to God. The way to become an adult is to spend time in the Word of God. Be obedient to its teachings. “Those that obey will show how completely they love Him.”
Failing, however, is the day you stop trying.
Let’s never stop aspire to be like Jesus.
“Lord I thank you for making me a baby again. Guide me to be the adult You want me to be. In Jesus name. Amen.”
